In search of America’s old covered bridges

چکیده

Abstract America’s first documented wooden covered bridge was erected at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1805. Hundreds were constructed within two decades and least 10,000 by the later 1800s. As settlers moved West, broad rivers crossed with inventive structures incorporating timber trusses ingeniously developed carpenters. Called bridges because of roof siding needed to protect trusses, they became ubiquitous features on American landscape. Over past centuries, most lost flood, ice, arson, lightening, decay, as well “progress,” replaced “modern” iron, concrete, steel spans. Of some 700 remaining, many are mere replicas their original forms no longer supported trusses. Genuine historic remain largely from last half 1800s while civic boosterism has led claims earlier dates often questionable authenticity. This essay presents three 1820s along a 10-mile stretch Wallkill River New Paltz, York. three, only Perrine’s Bridge, 1821 1822, is still standing intact Burr an iconic structure exceptional heritage value authentic re-building restoration 1834, 1846, 1917, 1968. Using documentary records, this establishes accurate intertwined chronology for bridges, detailing nineteenth century building practices contentious mid-twentieth struggles pitting preservationists wanting against those removal.

DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES USING MOMENTUM SEARCH ALGORITHM

Design optimization of cable-stayed bridges is a challenging optimization problem because a large number of variables is usually involved in the optimization process. For these structures the design variables are cross-sectional areas of the cables. In this study, an efficient metaheuristic algorithm namely, momentum search algorithm (MSA) is used to optimize the design of cable-stayed bridges....

A methodology for Determining the Seismic Vulnerability of Old Concrete Highway Bridges by Using Fragility Curves

Past earthquakes have demonstrated that old RC bridges may be seismically vulnerable. Bridge responses during the last decades illustrated the necessity of the seismic assessment of bridges especially those which were designed with old codes. In this research an existing concrete bridge representative of the most common bridges in the highway system in Iran are studied. Push over and nonlinear ...

Probabilistic Evaluation of Seismic Performance of RC Bridges in Iran

Many existing bridges were designed without adequate consideration of seismic risk. The full or partial collapse of even one major bridge in a city or community would have destroying results. There has been focuses on developing fragility-based seismic vulnerability of existing usual bridges in Iran or support decision making on seismic upgrade. This article focuses on developing performance b...
